The Role of Education in Cannabis Acceptance – Cannabis & Tech Today

When I think back to the early conversations around cannabis, especially twenty years ago, they didn’t happen out loud. They happened in whispers. You’d hear someone mention it behind closed doors, often with a hint of judgment or embarrassment. It was as if simply being curious about cannabis meant you were doing something wrong.

Even CBD, which doesn’t cause a high, was lumped in with the rest. It didn’t matter that it was non-intoxicating. The word “cannabis” itself was enough to shut down conversations among older adults who were taught their whole lives to see it as dangerous or illicit.

When I launched 55plus CBD, I saw that hesitation up close. Customers would pull me aside at community events or call me privately to ask questions they didn’t feel comfortable asking in public. Not because they lacked interest, but quite the opposite, they were curious. They wanted relief and they wanted safe and reliable options.

The shift I’ve witnessed over the past few years has been powerful. That shift didn’t happen by accident. It happened because education is finally catching up to science. People are starting to replace fear with facts, and that’s where real change begins.

The Bridge Between Science & Stigma

One of the most powerful insights I’ve heard about cannabis education came from Sasha Kalcheff-Korn, Executive Director of Realm of Caring. She put it plainly: “We know that research is necessary to influence the formal and informal policies based in stigma… But for that to happen, cannabis research needs to be translated into law and policy, a gap that widely hinders advances in public health.”

That gap between what science shows and what society accepts, is exactly where education becomes vital. We can have mountains of data, peer-reviewed studies, and real-world results, but if they’re not reaching the public, healthcare providers, and lawmakers, progress stalls. Research without education is just words on paper.

This is the work we do every day: helping to bridge that divide. More than simply providing high-quality CBD products, it’s about empowering older adults to make informed decisions. That means breaking through decades of stigma with facts and a deep respect for our customers’ desire to understand the “why” behind wellness.

When someone walks into our world skeptical, we see that as an opportunity. We don’t try to sell them, but instead we try to support them on their journey however we can. We talk through the research, explain how cannabinoids interact with the body, and most importantly, connect that science to their lived experience. Education isn’t a sales pitch to us, it is an attempt to build trust with a difficult demographic.

The Role of Credible Sources & Community

The shift in cannabis acceptance isn’t happening in a vacuum. It’s being driven by credible voices and committed communities. Organizations like Realm of Caring are leading the way by advocating for cannabis research and translating that research into language people can actually understand and use. Universities across the country are conducting more studies each and every day. Thankfully, more and more medical professionals are stepping forward to listen and learn alongside their patients.

This matters. Because in a space where misinformation has thrived for decades, trust is everything. People aren’t just looking for products they’re looking for fact-based answers they can rely on. At 55plus CBD, we constantly point our customers to trusted resources like Realm of Caring and medical guidance when it’s needed. Our job isn’t to be the final word, but rather a guide, helping people navigate this complex and constantly evolving industry.

Access to reliable information is what turns curiosity into confidence. It’s what allows someone who’s been wary of cannabis their whole life to say, “Okay, maybe this could help me, and now I understand how.” That’s more than education. That’s agency.

In a healthcare landscape where too many people feel like decisions are made for them, that kind of agency is powerful. It’s not just about cannabis wellness for us. We see it as restoring people’s ability to advocate for their own health and take it into their own hands.

Looking Ahead

I imagine a future where conversations about cannabis are no different than those about vitamins or nutrition. A world where people can talk openly with their doctors, families, and communities without fear of judgment. A future where cannabis is seen not through the lens of outdated stigma, but as a valid wellness tool. A tool that is constantly evaluated by evidence and respected for its potential.

We’re not all the way there yet. But we’re getting closer. Every time a caregiver asks a question or every time a doctor updates their understanding, that’s progress to us.

So here’s my ask: Stay curious. Keep asking questions. Push past the noise and seek out reputable sources like Realm of Caring. Whether you’re a patient, a practitioner, or just someone exploring your options—education is the most powerful tool you have.

Let’s build a future where facts lead the way and stigmas are left behind.
