Memorial Day
Memorial Day is an important holiday in the USA and it takes place on the last Monday of May every year. This year it will fall on Monday the 30th May. It is time to pay respects to those who have fallen and fought for the army over the many wars that have taken place since the holiday began. In America, this celebration often presents itself in the form of BBQs and cook-outs. If you’re not from America then all you’ll need to do is watch basically any American movie where someones hosting a summer party and you’ll see what it can be. Lovely barbequed food, lovely drink and lovely company. Country Living highlights the order of which people should prioritise their Memorial Day festivities:
“First, take a moment to get reacquainted with the holiday’s history. Next, put together a patriotic playlist via these Memorial Day songs. Then, it’s time to plan some family-friendly activities. But the centerpiece of the weekend will be the cookout! The kids want burgers, adults crave chicken, and, of course, everyone wants desserts!”
Memorial Day has changed slightly since it was first created. The civil war in America, happening in the years 1861-1865, took more lives than any other US conflict. 2% of the American population or 620,000 people lost their lives during a war that fought for freedom. In today’s standards, 2% of the US population would be 6 million people. The civil war was a fight over the long-lasting institution of slavery, as well as other societal issues. In the end, slavery was abolished by Abraham Lincoln in the 13th Amendment in 1865. Four million enslaved people were freed. However, this was only the beginning of creating a world where all people were treated equally. Still to this day, in 2022, it’s hard to see that this is completely the case.
After such a loss of lives, states in America began to hold tributes in the late 60s to those who had died. These small celebrations then became something more official when, in 1968, general John Logan, leader of the Northern Civil War Veterans, called for a national commemoration. History writes what he announced:
“The 30th of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land,”
Back then, it was known as Decoration Day. However, as more wars began to be fought – the likes of WW1, WW1, Vietnam, Koreak and Afghanistan – the day became about more than just the civil war. It became about all of the soldiers from all of the conflicts who had lost their lives. Then, in 1968, Decoration Day became known officially as Memorial Day and was announced a federal national holiday on the last Monday of May. This was to ensure that people got a longer weekend. And, the fact that May usually marks the beginning of summer, it’s no surprise that cook-outs became such a big thing during these celebrations.
Essential Cannabis Items
So, now you understand why people celebrate Memorial Day, it’s time to highlight the ideal cannabis items to have to make the most of your holiday. It’s important to remember what Memorial Day is about, and the importance of it to hopefully stop any more people from dying in war. Now we’re going to turn our attention to cannabis. As the world is changing, there are certain weed products that are standing above the rest. Let’s take a look.
Cannabis Vape
A cannabis vape, be it dry herb or cartridge, is an essential item. Whilst you may be outside, lighting up a joint and smoking it just doesn’t have the same ring to it anymore. The smell of the burning, the second hand unhealthy smoke and the time it takes to roll – these things really push people towards purchasing vapes. Plus, if you’re going to an event with children, you may not want to be promoting smoking cannabis.
Alternatively, cannabis vapes are discreet, slick and easy. They burn at a lower temperature so as to avoid combustion, making them far more healthy on the lung. Also, they avoid pumping out the scent of cannabis or burning substances. With a cannabis vape, you’ll be able to enjoy weed easily both indoors or outdoors during Memorial Day without drawing any unwanted attention. If you’re in a specific state, cannabis cartridges are legal and easily purchasable so you can use a cart vape. If you’re not, then try using a dry herb vape and placing the bud directly into the vape chamber. This could change your holiday.
THC-Infused Sauces
As we’ve mentioned, the likelihood of a barbeque and a cook-out is likely. Therefore, why not combine cannabis and cooking? It might sound insane, but there are actual THC-infused sauces that can be bought for you to put on your burgers, hotdogs and any other sauce-requiring foods. The Fly High brand has ketchup, mustard and hot sauce sachets with around 5mg of THC per packet.
“Usually a condiment is an afterthought, but ours is more like something to plan a meal around. Our ketchup is created from fresh vine-ripe tomatoes and savory spices, the secret ingredient is a cannabis infusion of 5MG THC per packet.”
It also wouldn’t be too hard to make these yourself. Nonetheless, with THC-infused sauces you can combine your love for cannabis with the beautiful cooking of BBQs.
THC Crisps
Another essential food item that is a must during a cook-out are crisps. It can take a while waiting for that BBQ to heat up and for the food to cook, so people usually love some nibbles as they wait. Well, THC-infused crips are also a thing. Who could have believed it? Forbes writes about a company in Seattle who have mastered the cannabis crisp.
“Roasted Garlic Chips fried in THC-infused olive oil joined the lineup, along with a Sweet Potato Chip seasoned with cinnamon, brown sugar and sea salt. All of the products are vegan, kosher and made with organic potatoes.”
With these crips – or something similar – you can take your Memorial Day to the next level. You can slowly ensure that you’re getting the right dosage of cannabis that you want throughout the day.
Bong
Perhaps if you’re going to a cook-out event that doesn’t have many children, and in fact has a bunch of like-minded people who want to have some fun, then this item might do perfectly. It might sound old-fashioned, but bongs are still one of the best ways to enjoy cannabis. With all of the fresh and new cannabis products out there, it sometimes seems a little 2004 to talk about bongs. But, actually, they are great. A nice glass or ceramic bong – made with the user in mind – can really be an asset to a holiday. The water acts as a cooler, and allows for the smoke to lower in temperature. The body of the bong will build up with smoke, meaning that when you inhale you’ll be taking a huge hit. One of these, and you’ll be guaranteed to have a good celebration.
Cannabis Brownies
Now you have snacks and some sauces to play on your food, you’ll need to start thinking about dessert. Cannabis brownies are the number one THC-infused treat. They’re easy to make, and they’re delicious to consume. Check out our recommended recipe here. There’s nothing better than cracking out a batch of weed brownies at the end of a day to get everyone excited. Plus, it shows you’ve taken the time to think about others.
Conclusion
Memorial Day is a national holiday in America that allows time for people to remember those who have passed fighting for the nation. Hopefully, wherever you are this holiday, you’ll be able to pay your respects. And, if you’re a cannabis lover, then hopefully you’ll be able to find the time to get some of these essential cannabis items to make your day a good one.
